This paper examines urban morphological research in the United States from a geographical perspective. Attention is given to the historiographical development of the field and the underlying cultural values of American society which make American forms distinctive, but the main emphasis is on the evolution of town planning ideas in practice and the systematic morphological structure and character of American cities. Some discussion is offered of the recent perceptual dimension in American urban morphology.
