Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • Papers should be critical rather than descriptive; they should relate individual examples and case studies to wider theories; and should deal with “urban form” in the level of detail seen in published papers in this journal.
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, DOIs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, including use of APA6 format for the list of references.
  • Author details (affiliations, contact details, ORCID IDs) should be contained in a separate file.
  • To speed the review process, authors are invited to provide the contact details of 3-5 appropriate independent scholars who could be invited to review the submission.

Submitted papers must be original and not under consideration by any other journal. Papers should be critical rather than descriptive; should relate individual examples and case studies to wider theories; and should deal with “urban form” in the level of detail seen in published papers in this journal. The journal does not publish literature review papers, with the exception of its series on the study of urban form in particular countries. It does not publish stand-alone case studies, although these might be suitable as Viewpoints.

Notes for the guidance of contributors to Urban Morphology (PDF) should be referred to in preparing submissions. Authors are reminded that the readership is international, and that articles are accepted for publication only after favourable review by at least two independent referees, and that Urban Morphology follows the ethical standards of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Research Articles

Main papers should discuss new empirical research and analysis, or new concepts. Such papers should preferably not exceed 7000 words with an English abstract in less than 200 words and up to five key words. Papers should be critical rather than descriptive; should relate individual examples and case studies to wider theories; and should deal with “urban form” in the level of detail seen in published papers in this journal. The journal does not publish literature review papers, with the exception of its series on the study of urban form in particular countries.

Viewpoints

Viewpoints are welcomed, generating discussion on previous papers in this journal or on other short topics of morphological interest. Viewpoints should not exceed 4000 words.

Praxis

Praxis contributions, of up to 6000 words, can explore actual or theoretical applications of morphological ideas to built environment practice.

Ideas

Ideas contributions, of up to 4000 words, can describe new ideas related to the study of urban form.
